Nutritive Triphala

Triphala ("three fruits"), is an herbal combination originating in India in Ayurvedic traditions.  It has shown itself to be a whole body cleanser. It helps detoxify and cleanse the colon, purifies the blood, and removes toxins from the liver. Other cleansing benefits of Triphala include reducing some forms of cholesterol (serum cholesterol), and in reducing high blood pressure.

Triphala aids in weight loss by regulating digestion and metabolic function. It is also a safe laxative which rejuvenates intestines, tissues, and cells of the body.

Triphala is a very effective compound made by mixing equal parts of powder of Emblica Officinalis, Terminalia Belerica & Terminalia Chebula. It is a balanced formula for all body types.

When taken in large doses at night, it has cleansing and detoxifying action, when one or two capsules taken with meals, it has a building and rejuvenating effect.

When used regularly, it is good for gentle, slow detoxification of the digestive tract and then the deep tissue. As each of the three ingredients show strong inhibiting actions against the HIV and other viruses, this formula should be considered as a daily dietary addition to people working with, or exposed to, high-risk areas or people. The overall tonic effect of the these three fruits has been known for thousands of years in India and other Asian countries.

Prolonged use of triphala is safe and non-habit forming; in fact it rejuvenates the intestines, tissues, and cells of the body, prevents cancer, and aids in weight loss. It is known to promote the absorption of B vitamins and to improve the general absorption of all nutrients and vitamins contained in our food. As a daily supplement triphala is hard to beat; that’s why in India they say "even if your mother leaves you, every thing will be fine if you have triphala."

Emblica officinalis (AMLA) is a rich source of natural vitamin C. it reduces unwanted fat, detoxifies the body, regulates digestion, and promotes metabolic function.

Terminalia Belerica has a strong purgative action as such diseases are said to fear it. It can expel stones or other kapha-type accumulations in the digestive, urinary, and respiratory tracts. It is also a strong rejuvenator of the body, especially for the voice, vision and hair.

Recent research shows that Terminalia Belerica reduces levels of lipids (important dietary constituents that are insoluble in water; they contain vitamins and essential fatty acids; in excess they cause fat buildup in the tissues) throughout the body and specifically lower the lipid levels in the liver and heart. This shows a strong action in preventing heart and liver fat congestion, which can lower the disease risk associated with those organs. Other studies indicate that Terminalia Belerica has retroviral actions in inhibiting the viral growth in leukemia patients, and yet another study indicates the strong inhibiting effect Terminalia Belerica has on the HIV virus.  As a daily rejuvenating and preventative supplement Terminalia Belerica is superb. Terminalia Belerica is a recommended daily supplement, alone or in the triphala formula.

Terminalia Chebula is called the "king of medicines" in Tibet and is always listed first in the Ayurvedic meteria medica because of its extraordinary powers of healing. In Ayurveda it is considered to destroy all diseases and eliminate all waste from the body. At the same time, it is known to promote tissue growth and health.

Terminalia Chebula is used to treat digestive diseases, urinary diseases, diabetes, skin diseases, parasitic infections, heart diseases, irregular fevers, flatulence, constipation, ulcers, vomiting, colic pain and hemorrhoids. If taken after meals it prevents imbalance of any of the humors due to bad food or drink. It promotes wisdom, intellect and eyesight.

Modern science has found that Terminalia Chebula has a strong effect against the herpes simplex virus HSV, has antibacterial activity, and exhibits strong cardio tonic properties. Terminalia Chebula also has antioxidant components, which indicates it can increase the life of tissues. Yet another study shows the anti-tumor activity of Terminalia Chebula and another study shows that it has considerable effect in inhibiting the HIV virus which ultimately results in AIDS

Thus, Terminalia Chebula can be seen to be a valuable addition to anyone’s herbal collection. With its rejuvenating and cleansing properties, Terminalia Chebula is excellent for the digestive system. As a preventative supplement it has great anti viral attributes, as shown by its antitumor and HIV action. It is also effective for alleviating constipation in general, and is helpful for vata persons because it works in the triphala formula which  is a well balanced digestive and rejuvenating aid.

Constipation is the chief cause of many diseases, and such a condition produces toxins.  These toxins find their way into the blood stream and are carried to all parts of the body.  This results in weaning of the vital organs and lowering of the resistance of the entire system. Appendicitis, Rheumatism, Arthritis, High blood pressure, and cataract are only a few of the diseases in which chronic constipation is an important predisposing factor.

Triphala is a balanced formula for all body types.  When taken in large doses at night before night, it has cleansing & detoxifying action, when one or two capsules taken with meals, it has a building & rejuvenating effect. When used regularly, it is good for gentle, slow detoxification of the digestive tract & then the deep tissue. Prolonged use of triphala is safe and non-habit forming; in fact it helps rejuvenate the intestines, tissues, and cells of the body, may help prevent cancer, and aid in weight loss.

My colleague Michael Tierra suggests that you consider how tremendously valuable this Triphala formula is, since it not only regulates bowel movement but at the same time does the following:

  • Improves digestion,
  • Reduces serum cholesterol,
  • Improves circulation (potentiates adrenergic function),
  • Contains 31% linoleic acid,
  • Exerts a marked cardio-protective effect,
  • Reduces high blood pressure,
  • Improves liver function,
  • Has proven anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties,
  • Expectorant, hypotensive.

And continues to note that "The three fruits of Triphala (Harada, Amla and Bihara) each correspond to the "three humours" or "tridosha" of Indian Ayurvedic medicine. According to Ayurvedic theory, the body is composed of three doshas or humours. Vata is sometimes translated as "wind" which corresponds to the mind and nervous system. Its nature is dry, cold, light and activating. The second is pitta which is also translated as "fire" or "bile." It is responsible for all metabolic transformations including the digestion and assimilation of food as well as assimilation and clarity of thought and understanding. The nature of pitta is primarily hot, moist and light. Kapha is sometimes translated as the "water" or "mucus" humour and is responsible for all anabolic or building functions such as the development of muscle and bone tissue. Its nature is cool, moist and heavy."
