Staying Healthy This Season

SUMMER: During this time focus on cleansing and restoration of the small intestine and heart, organs that focus on circulation and heat distribution.

Summer gives us many water filled fruits at a time when the heat of the season can lead to overall diminished hydration.  In a time when so many depend on beer, soda and coffee that can promote dehydration, paying attention to the foods we choose to eat is important.

This is a good time to cut back on refined and fatty foods.

A good idea may be to rest from food one day each week.  Following our Rejuvenation Cleanse may be a good choice to help accomplish this goal.

Fruits: Local wild berries, apples, melon, papaya, mango, pineapple, peach, apricot and cherries.

Grains: Brown rice, corn, oats, oat bran, quinoa.

A brown rice fast one day each week serves to cleanse the small intestine by making it more able to assimilate nutrients.  This fast may also help eliminate heavy metals from the body.  Cook 3 cups of organic short grain brown rice in 7 cups of pure water.  Add one medium red onion and a spoonful of dulse.  Eat from this throughout the day.

Herbs: Ginger, garlic, cayenne, ginseng, red clover, sorrel, valerian, hawthorne, yarrow, nettle, rosemary.

Seeds: flax, chia.

Vegetables: Bitter foods and herbs, hot greens such as mustard, watercress, and other greens such as dandelion leaf, spinach, lettuces, green beans, cauliflower and chard.

Meat & Diary: Fish, goat’s milk and goat cheese.

Try to avoid: Alcohol, drugs, sugar, honey, chemical additives, coffee, chocolate, ice cream; eating too much meat, eggs or cheese.

Later in the summer, from mid-August to the fall equinox, plan to focus on cleansing and restoring the spleen and stomach.
