from Matthias Rath, MD: The fourth-greatest cause of death - "Polypharmacy"

The above statistic by the World Health Organisation does not take into account that the serious side effects of medical drugs have now become the fourth-greatest cause of death, after heart infarction, cancer, and stroke. To keep people from finding this out, the pharmaceutical industry has even come up with a diagnostic term for this cause of death: "polypharmacy," meaning too much pharmaceutical medication.

killer "polypharmacy" - an epidemic caused by the pharmaceutical industry itself.

What are some options?

  • pH Balancing

  • If you are currently taking diuretic medication for blood pressure lowering, you might wish to know -

These drugs remove sodium and fluids from your body.  These drugs also lead to reduction or serious loss of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc, which are important minerals for health.

Sodium and water are very important to the fluid balance mechanism of your physiology.

Ask about a test called the plasma renin level.  More information can be found  at:http://www.labcorp.com/datasets/labcorp/html/chapter/mono/sr003300.htm

Some choices for natural blood pressure lowering supplements diuretics are garlic, hawthorne, olive leaf, valerian, parsley, juniper berry, mistletoe, vinca, motherwort, essential fatty acids (omega 3); high absorption (protein bound) calcium, magnesium, or potassium; a vitamin-mineral supplement, lecithin, or vitamin B complex.

Drink distilled water, and take a 'lick' of natural mineral salt (Blackfoot Traditional Salt) daily.

  • Statin drugs for cholesterol lowering

These drugs reduce by 40%, or eliminate the ability of the liver to manufacture CO Enzyme Q10.  It is necessary to add 60 mg. up to 300 mg. of CO Q10 daily to make up for this loss.

LDL or low density lipoprotein increases your risk of ateriosclerosis and heart dis-ease.  Liver disease, immune system dys-function, and periodontal dis-ease are common with low levels of CO Q10.  CO Q10 provides vital energy to the heart.

Choices for natural cholesterol lowering support include niacin (vitamin B3, taken with bioSupplemente Naturalle for B complex support).  Garlic has been studied and is known to reduce LDL up to 15% and increase HDL by 10%.  Guggul has been studied and has shown the reduction of LDL up to 25% and an increase of HDL up to 20%.  Lecithin may lower your  cholesterol.

Other supplements that may be helpful are: Beta-Carotene, Selenium, Vitamin E ( mixed natural tocopherols of 400 IU to 1200 IU daily - begin with 100 IU daily if you have high blood pressure), Vitamin C, Flax oil, Fish oil (Cod liver oil is my choice), and the amino acids lysine and proline.  Adding fiber to your diet is also very important.

  • Pain & Inflammation

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) are drugs like ibuprofen, tylenol, aspirin, Naprosyn, Daypro, et al.

NSAIDs decrease folate and prostaglandins, and may lead to iron deficiency.  Cartilage in decreased and this may promote the acceleration of arthritis and joint destruction.  Ulcers and internal bleeding are associated with these drugs, and they have been associated with liver and kidney failure.

Other choices may be cayenne, bromelain, turmeric, ginger, boswellia.  Emu oil has been shown to be useful as well.

Glucosamine is better and safer that ibuprofen, as it targets the joints and decreases the chance of side effects.  MSM is well documented in the research as helpful for pain and inflammation.

Several flower essences have been known, after many decades of use, to be helpful in pain management.

  •  Antibiotics

Antibiotics should not be used as prophylactics or to treat a virus.  These drugs kill off both good and bad bacteria in the body, and may lead to the development of secondary infection, often leading to Candida albicans (yeast) overgrowth.

Antibiotics interfere with folate, B complex and B1 - B2 - B3 - B6 - B12, and vitamin A.

Vitamin A can protect against pneumonia.

Vitamin C - E - B, Beta Carotene, CO Q10, proanthocyanidins ( grapeseed and pine bark), garlic, echinacea, elderberry, astragalus, and probiotics  assist in maintaining health and preventing and treating infection.

  • Tinnitus

Low levels of manganese may be indicative of this symptom.  Dandelion is a good source of manganese.

  • Interesting statistics: Medicine wars

Who pays for the research and development of new medicines? What medicines get most of the research and development money? These questions have been highlighted the recent controversy regarding the cost of anti-HIV drugs in South Africa. Private companies seeking to maximize profits, spend on medicines that can be sold to richer, developed nations. The cost of this 'economic rationale' is born by the people of developing and poor nations. Illnesses like malaria get ignored and millions are spent on drugs, which promise to cure the ailments of affluence.

Drug wars - Pharmaceutical companies, claims of investing in research are disputable

* The research and development cost of an average new drug is only US $ 57-71 million
* Only 22% of the new drugs in the last two decades were medically innovative
* Some of the top pharmaceutical companies spent twice the amount on advertisement than they did on research and development

Value of the medicines - Not even one-third of the new medicines produced in the US are important for the cure of any important disease

* Important therapeutic values - 16%
* Modest therapeutic values - 53%
* Little or no therapeutic values - 31%

Public costs, private profits - While private companies enjoy profits from selling medicines which find large usage, it is public-funded research which helps develop these medicines

Who paid for research that led to the five highest-selling drugs in the US?

* Foreign academic institution - 30%
* Public funded research - 53%
* Private industry funded research - 15%

For highest selling medicines in the US, the percentage of cost borne by either the US public or foreign research institutions is as follows:

* Varotech - 86%
* Zantec - 80%
* Mozac - 77%
* Zovirax - 75%
